Muse of the Month October 2013: Kester Black director and designer – Anna Ross

Anna Ross

Anna Ross

Anna Ross of Kester Black nail polish is Melbourne Darling’s Muse of the Month for October 2013 because of her innovative and ethical contribution to the nail polish industry, her fun design sense and her go-getting entrepreneurial attitude.

If you haven’t heard of nail polish brand Kester Black, then you are about to fall in love…

Kester Black brings you everything you could ever want in a nail polish and more! All Kester Black nail polishes contain non-toxic ingredients and are made of a “Five Free Formula” meaning they are free from the nasty chemicals Toluene, DBP, Camphor, Formaldehyde and Formeheldyde Resin. The polishes are carcinogen free, making them suitable to be used by chemotherapy patients, pregnant women and children as well as being Australian Made, Animal Cruelty free and Vegan.

Not only does this superhero status nail polish brand contain a winning formula, but they produce a stunning range of striking nail polish colours. Take a look at their newest range for Spring and Summer 2013, ‘Tropicana’:

Kester Black Tropicana Range

These colours just make me want to put on some denim shorts and eat a gelato on the beach!

I got to meet the lovely Anna Ross and ask her some questions about Kester Black, where she finds her inspiration and a few of her favourite things!

Where did the name Kester Black come from?

‘The name Kester Black came from my favourite place in the world, St Kester Bay in New Zealand. I was with some family friends close by and one day we took the boat out through the sounds and ended up in the beautiful St Kester Bay. We found out it only has one house there which is owned by a priest (hence the choice of the colour black). I just think that place is the pinnacle of  New Zealand beauty and I wanted my business name to have a tie with where I come from.’

What was the inspiration behind Kester Black?

‘Kester Black started as a clothing label when I was at fashion school. I wanted to continue it when I moved to Australia four years ago, however I couldn’t afford to buy new machines when I arrived. I began making jewellery just to keep my portfolio ticking over, with the idea I would one day get a job as a designer. I did eventually get my foot in the door in fashion but at that point I had worked so hard on Kester Black that I wasn’t really willing to give it up anymore. The move to nail polish was an unexpected progression. With such a strong desire to work with colour, I originally wanted to have nail polish to complement the silver rings I designed! Obviously it worked out really well, and I as a result I have come to absolutely love designing nail polish!’

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your journey so far?

‘That’s a really hard question as there has been so many. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to gain so many skills and develop so much knowledge about running a business, but I think the best part about it all, is getting to spend my days at home, in my own office, with my cat curled up on the desk listening to music way too loudly.’

What are your favourite things to do as a Melbourne Darling?

‘After having just spent 6 weeks in Europe, I realised Melbourne really is the best city in the world. I love having a wander along Gertrude Street on a Saturday afternoon and I really appreciate the unique stores in Fitzroy as it is hard to find such an assortment of small designers like we have here anywhere else in the world. On a Thursday or Friday night I usually meet up with friends on Lygon Street Brunswick East. There are some awesome bars along there like The Alderman, Mr Wilkinson and Atticus Finch to name a few of my favourites. On Saturday morning I usually have breakfast with my 3 housemates in Carlton North on Rathdowne Street or Lygon Street and in summer I love going to the Moonlight Cinema or heading to the Queen Victoria Night Markets for dinner and Sangria! That being said, I’m surprised I actually get any work done at all!’

Lastly, what is your personal favourite Kester Black product to wear?

I love the Floral ring, worn with Bubblegum nail polish.

As previously mentioned in my post about the stellar combination that is Kester Black Nail Polish and Trophy Wife Nail Art, the two close friends, Anna Ross and Chelsea Bagan of Trophy Wife Nail Art collaborated to produce the Nail Art Book in 2012.

I personally own this book and think it’s fantastic. The comprehensive and heavily illustrated step-by-step guide to 15 fabulous nail art designs and would recommend it to anyone who wants to try nail art for themselves, but may find it a little daunting (and for those who don’t like watching You-Tube video tutorials). I particularly like that the back of the book features a ‘Gloss-ary’, mentioning all of the nail polishes used to create the nail art designs, so you can go out and find the exact same shades they used to create the same looks. Have a peek inside for yourself here.

The two lovely ladies also worked together to produce two new nail polish colours, an Aqua colour called ‘Alimony’ and a glitzy gold glitter bomb named ‘Gold Digger’ I absolutely adore ‘Gold Digger’, it is an intense burst of fine gold glitter that covers the nail beautifully and completely, unlike many glitter nail polishes that appear on the nail as a very weak version of what they look like inside the bottle. My favourites from the Tropicana range have to be the shade ‘Bougainvillea’ from the Tropicana range, a playful and bright pop of purple and ‘Laguna’, a dark yet delicate shade of deep sea blue/green.

Anna Ross has shared with Melbourne Darling that she will no longer be designing jewellery for Kester Black, but instead will be shifting the focus of Kester Black entirely to nail polish. With that exciting news, stay tuned for the upcoming developments of this fun and spunky brand, (and what new and imaginative colours Anna develops next!) You can find a listing of your closest Kester Black Nail Polish stockist on their website.

In the meantime, here comes the hard question, which colour will you be wearing this summer?

Ask Melbourne Darling: Where can I find the best wedding shoes?

Dear Melbourne Darling,

Where can I find the best wedding shoes?

(I’m looking for something metallic/silver?)

My main advice when shopping for bridal shoes is to invest some time to look around as many different stores as you can. Even if some stores are not ones you would typically  think of for bridal shoes. I recommend trying on as many styles as you can as. This will quickly help you determine which styles you like and which suit you, especially since many shoe styles can look dramatically different sitting on a shelf  opposed to when they are worn on the foot.

As always, the style of shoe is dependent on the style of the dress, so I am going to make some general shopping suggestions to help any bride to be (and bridal party) to help with your shoe hunt for the big day.

1. DESIGNER SHOE STORES:

  • David Jones and Myer – Bourke St

These department stores are a great place to start off with, especially to get a feel for the different types of styles and designers available. I recommend the city locations as the flagship stores tend to have the biggest and best selection available in comparison to their suburban counterparts, although Chadstone and Highpoint are your second best locations.

  • Miss Louise

The go-to place in Melbourne for a wonderful selection designer shoes. A fancy little spot showcasing a stunning selection of  high designer heels.

  • Hermanns

Hermanns are the sole distributors of Stuart Weitzman, Edward Meller and own the Giallo stores with most locations in the CBD, Chadstone or David Jones. (Edward Meller and Giallo are a bit too casual but Stuart Weitzman do feature a few ultra-modern and fashion forward designs. So if you like their styles online, I’d suggest visiting a retail store)

2. ONLINE STORES:

  • The Iconic

Offers a wide selection of shoes to choose from as well as free overnight shipping for all orders over $50 and free returns for 100 days.  For bridal heels specifically in silver and metallic, I’d have a look at the following selection of strappy silver heels:

http://www.theiconic.com.au/womens-shoes/?colour=Silver&page=1&category=36

and take a look at these beautiful silver Guess heels:

As well as these metallic Verali heels:

  • Cinderella Bella

(This business used to have a great store in Melbourne for designer bridal shoes, but operate through their online store only. While their selection has dramatically decreased, if you’re lucky you might find a suitable style from the limited sale items that remain on their site.)

I also found these two styles by Jimmy Choo from the Jimmy Choo Australia website to be a steal of a price and a gorgeous style for a  fun, stylish and modern bride:

3. CUSTOM MADE:

Finding you’re not happy with the selection of heels you come across on the shop floor or have your heart set on a particular style you haven’t been able to find? A pair of custom heels for your special day could be your best way to go. You may even find that a custom pair are not as expensive as you’d think.

  • Novat Shoes

Don’t be disheartened by their limited, more traditional and slightly dated styles online, be sure to check out their retail store in Thornbury as only a small selection of the styles they hold are featured online. It’s also worth the visit to ask about their custom shoe design service.

  • Shoes of Prey

4. RETAIL STORES:

Often overlooked because they are not your typical bridal shoe stores, an offering from the high street may pleasantly surprise you. Links to each website provided below, where you will be able to find information on your most convenient store location:

My suggested itinerary would be to make the city your first stop, as it’s the best place get a feel for the types of styles available and the designs you like.

Start off at David Jones and Myer then head to Miss Louise and Stuart Weitzman then while you are still in the city, make a stop to the high street brand stores as they are alllocated fairly close to each other.

From there you can head to the Preston / Thornbury area to visit Novat shoes (check out their store or look at their custom made options) and then to the Tony Bianco outlet, Diana Ferrari and Florsheim outlet. That way, when you’re ready to look online you would have already tried on a number of paris which will help you make it easier to distinguish which styles would suit you when browsing online.

Happy Shopping!

Love,

Jiggy

This event is for all the Hip Hop Honeys out there…

I specifically remember being a young girl, flicking through an older cousin’s old high school yearbook and being fascinated by the page of senior year students and their ‘life motto’ written underneath each of their photos. While most of these quotes were inspirational sayings of famous figures or motivational words of wisdom, the one that stuck with me that I still remember to this day was one girl’s life motto that simply read ‘Just get Jiggy with It’. Maybe it was because I didn’t understand what on Earth it meant but the repercussion of this memory is that I get a mental image of the pensive look on that girl’s yearbook photo to this day, every time I hear that phrase …

Honestly, even with a little help from Urban Dictionary, I’m still a little confused by what exactly it means to ‘get jiggy with it’… but what I can tell you is that Sugar Nightclub make it very clear they know how to get down like Will Smith and ‘get Jiggy on Fridays’ with their new Hip Hop & RnB night.

Jiggy’ on Friday nights celebrates its opening night tonight, Friday 4thJonn Hart October. The new regular Friday event guarantees to be playing a mix of new and old school RNB and Hip Hop favourites every week from 9pm. Attendees of the launch party tonight are also promised a performance by rapper Jonn Hart of Who Booty’. If you and your guurls love a bit of booty popping than this looks like a fun new place to twerk dance the night away.

The Finder’s Keepers Market is a wonderful design and art market, not only selling local designer goods and quirky pieces, the Finder’s Keepers Market ensures an enjoyable outing with DJ sets, great food, alcohol and of course, good coffee. I personally want to check out the Frankie Vintage Emporium as well as a range of other exciting stalls and unique pieces on offer from the likes of Sophie.B and The Lost Words

Lark Fitzroy Store Opening

Image via lark.com.au

Image via lark.com.au

The delightful label Lark has been making kitsch cool with their well-known Daylesford store and retail website, stocking cute, quirky and crafty home wares, party goods and accessories.  Lark owner, Allison Jones certainly has a good eye for design, handpicking all of her merchandise from prominent local and international designers, stocking everyone from Love Mae to Orla Kiely. It therefore shouldn’t come as much of the surprise that the location Allison selected for a new Lark Pop-Up store is situated in the urban artistic hub of Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.

The much anticipated opening of the Lark Pop-Up store has finally arrived, with the store opening its doors for the first time today, Friday 27th September. The store is only planned to occupy its Gertrude street location for a six month period, so if you are not yet familiar with Lark’s lively collection of vintage inspired goods, now is your chance to become quickly acquainted. The Fitzroy store will stock an extensive selection of the goodies from their online store, as well as a few exciting new additions, including in-store pick up for online purchases, in-store craft events and a ‘confetti bar’ where you can customise and create your own confetti.

From the sneak peeks that Lark’s social media pages has provided it’s eager followers over the past few months, this bright, gelato coloured wonderland will have you feel like you’ve stepped into Cindy Brady’s dream birthday party and this is one pretty party you definitely don’t want to miss!

Melbourne Store Opening: West Elm

American retail giant Williams-Sonoma launched their first ever Australian residency a few months ago with the opening of Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and West Elm stores in Sydney. Thankfully it did not take them too long to make their way to our stylish city of Melbourne!

Originally from Brooklyn, the furniture and homewares store ‘West Elm’ opened its first Melbourne store on Thursday 21st September in Chapel Street, South Yarra. You may be familiar with West Elm, known for their eclectic mix and match collections if you happened to shop at one of their stores in New York, and luckily, you no longer need to worry about that far distance freight! The best thing about West Elm, even with just a quick browse through their website,  you will find it ever so easy to imagine incorporating their versatile and modern pieces amongst your own collection at home. Another impressive factor is the store’s attempt to deviate from their ‘American giant’ image through their creative effort to collaborate with local brands and Etsy sellers to showcase and sell locally designed homewares in store too! I personally find myself drawn to their nature-inspired twig and branch designs!

Here are Melbourne Darling’s Top 5 Picks:

Melbourne Central One Day Shopping Festival

Melbourne Central One Day Shopping Festival

Melbourne Darling’s Top 5 picks for the Melbourne Central One Day Shopping Festival:

  1. Treasure Hunt – If you’re super keen on getting the most out of the One Day Shopping Festival, and plan to get down to Melbourne Central early in the day, then make your first stop the Information Desk where the first 200 shoppers can receive a treasure hunt pack with discounts and goodies to help shoppers get the best buys of the day.
  2. Cotton On, Typo and Rubi Shoes – All offering 30% off. With that extra incentive, its time to finally snag one of Typo’s StagHeads I’ve had my eye on since they arrived in store a few months ago. Then its time to make my way to Rubi Shoes for what I think is the best buy for this summer’s footwear craze (no not jellies, the other footwear craze – clogs.) At $39.95, the Palm Springs Heel are already a steal, but at 30% off at the reduced price at $27.90 you simply cannot go wrong with buying a pair of these wooden clogs, and with a fantastic range of colours to choose from, these shoes should come with a warning: You may just  find yourself buying more than one pair! )
  3. Valleygirl – Valleygirl is one store not be overlooked this Spring. Their feminine, playful and colourful new collection will put a spring in your step and their prices are fantastic, not to mention the 30% off they are offering for today!
  4. Witchery -  No doubt the store that I believe has the best Spring fashion offering in Melbourne, Witchery has an abundance of wonderful pieces that hit the mark when it comes to soft, classic and neutral colours that are classic enough to see you through different seasons yet manage to add that small pinch of  difference with the refined edginess and hint of futuristic fashion as seen in the asymettrical features, laser cuts and leather additions to their designs.
  5. Gorgeous Cosmetics – These gorgeous people know their fake eyelashes and lipliner! Their Scarlette lipliner is a favourite of mine, its long lasting, easy to use and the perfect colour that allows you to get away with using it for a variety of pink and red lipsticks. I’m taking up this opportunity to stock up on this fantastic lipliner with 40% off.

The Rumours are true! H&M is coming to GPO

The rumours were true! Following up from our last post on the speculated location of Australia’s first H&M store, it has now been confirmed that H&M will be taking up residency in Melbourne’s architectural heirloom – the GPO building. Uncertainty still remains surrounding exactly when the much anticipated store will be opening, with some reports stating before Christmas 2013, and others stating it will not be until 2014. But there is one thing that is certain, it is going to be one glorious store!
